Schedule A ConsultationWhat Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body and improve body contours and proportions by eliminating fat deposits from areas resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is suitable for both men and women and can help you achieve your desired body shape and boost your confidence levels.
Liposuction does not help correct sagging skin and may make this issue appear more pronounced. It is often used in conjunction with other surgical procedures (tummy tuck, thighplasty, etc,) to provide the best results.

- Individuals who have localized excess fat that has been resistant to diet and exercise;

What Areas Can Be Treated With Liposuction?
What Is Involved In The Liposuction Procedure?
The procedure typically begins with the administration of anesthesia, which can be local, regional, or general, depending on the extent of the surgery and the preference of the patient and Dr. Angelina. At Surgicare Arts & Aesthetics, you can benefit from Awake Liposuction which allows patients to remain comfortable with a form of sedation tailored to their specific needs.
Small, discreet incisions are made near the targeted liposuction areas.
A sterile solution that often contains a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the area with the fat deposits to reduce bleeding, swelling, and pain.
A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through the incisions and is used to access the excess fat. In traditional liposuction, the cannula is moved back and forth to loosen the fat deposits. During VASER liposuction, a special probe is inserted into the incisions and the fat cells are shaken loose using ultrasound energy while leaving the surrounding tissues, nerves, and blood vessels unaffected.
The loosened fat is then suctioned out using a specialized surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.
After the fat is removed, the incisions are closed, and the treated areas are fitted with special compression garments to reduce swelling and bruising and help the treated areas to properly heal.
Recovery
Your liposuction recovery will vary depending on the technique used to remove the excess fat, the location it was removed from, and how many areas were treated. It is normal to experience swelling and bruising, but both will gradually go away on their own. It can take up to three months for all the swelling to subside, but the discomfort due to swelling should not last more than about two weeks.
Dr. Angelina will prescribe some pain medication that will help ease the mild to moderate pain that can occur for the first few days. Some people do not feel any pain and never have to take their prescription medication, but you will have it to use if needed.
Most liposuction incisions do not require stitches, but they will require some special care for the first few days after your procedure. Dr. Angelina will give you detailed instructions regarding their post-op care to help the incisions heal quickly. They may seep (drain), which will require you to change the dressing that is protecting the incision areas regularly for two or three days. She will take care to place the incisions in discreet locations to minimize scarring so they will not be visible after your recovery.
Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work after just a few days, but you will have activity restrictions for at least a month or two after your liposuction procedure. You will be instructed to limit your activity to low impact, such as walking, for the first week, and you will need to avoid direct sunlight, hot baths, saunas, etc, for at least two weeks.
Dr. Angelina will monitor your healing progress and let you know when you can resume different activities. She will also provide further recommendations and detailed instructions on how to recover quickly.
What Risks Are Involved In Liposuction?
Any surgical procedure has associated risks and though considered very safe, liposuction has certain risks that may be possible. The use of general anesthesia has its own risks and side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, etc.
Liposuction is safe and low-risk when done by an experienced cosmetic surgeon like triple board-certified Dr. Angelina Postoev. She and her team of professionals prioritize your safety while creating the natural contours that you desire. One safety precaution in place is that no more than 5 liters of fat can be removed from an individual during one procedure. If you have an excess of this amount, you will need to undergo two separate surgeries with a waiting period in between.
Some complications that may arise during or after liposuction depending on the technique include:
- Swelling
- Fat embolism
- Bruising
- Seroma (fluid build-up)
- Loose skin
- Skin discoloration
- Uneven contouring
- Thermal injury
- Numbness
- Blood clots
Results
The results of liposuction are considered permanent; the fat cells that are removed will not come back, but maintaining a stable weight is necessary to preserve your results, as the remaining fat cells can still expand if you gain weight.
Do not be alarmed if immediately after your procedure you do not see visible results; this can be due to the leftover tumescent fluid remaining in the treatment areas and the natural swelling that is manifesting as part of the normal healing process.
As swelling decreases, the treated areas will begin to show a more defined and contoured appearance, and you should be able to see your final results anywhere between three and six months.
Liposuction Before And After
Liposuction can be performed as a stand-alone procedure but is often combined with other forms of cosmetic surgery to provide the best results. We invite you to look through our gallery of before and after liposuction pictures, where you will see various examples of results.
