About
Excess fat in the upper arm area can give you the appearance of being out of shape and reduce your self-confidence. As we age, our metabolic rates tend to decrease, and natural hormone levels are disrupted causing our bodies to store excess fat and inhibiting our ability to build muscle. This excess fat can settle in the arms and often diet and exercise are not enough to mitigate it.
This excess fat can affect both men and women however, women naturally have a higher percentage of body fat and lower percentages of testosterone so statistically, they have more issues with arm flab. Liposuction can get rid of this excess flab and create more defined youthful upper arms.
What is Arm Liposuction?
Arm liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure used to define and contour the upper arm area. A small instrument called a cannula is inserted through tiny incisions and fat cells are vacuumed out. Often it is performed in tandem with lipo on the upper back called “bra rolls” to enhance the overall body contour and provide natural-looking results.
What Are the Benefits of Arm Liposuction?
Arm liposuction provides the following benefits to patients:
-
- Toned arms create a more youthful appearance;
- Arms will be better proportionate;
- Can confidently wear sleeveless clothing.
Arm Liposuction for Men
Men often turn to upper arm liposuction to help them get rid of fat deposits they were unable to address through diet and exercise. After arm lipo removes the unwanted fat deposits from the upper arm, men can hit the gym to work on building muscle in this area which tightens up the skin and creates toned muscular defined arms.

What Should I Expect from the Procedure?
During liposuction, fat is extracted from the upper arms and armpit area but not from the forearms. The surgeon will take care to remove the optimal amount of fat and sculpt the area to ensure it is well contoured so the results will look natural.
A local anesthetic is used to numb the area and a few tiny incisions are (typically made near the underarm and elbow) to allow access for the cannula to remove the unwanted fat. Holding the cannula, the surgeon uses smooth back-and-forth motions to break up the fat and suction it out through the tube.
Recovery From Arm Liposuction
After the procedure, the patient is discharged to return home to begin their recovery. Since this is done as an outpatient procedure, there is no need for an overnight stay.
The surgeon will provide the patient with aftercare instructions and prescriptions that will help prevent infection. During arm liposuction recovery, the patient must wear compression sleeves from two to six weeks after the surgery. These compression sleeves help promote healing by exerting even pressure across the treated areas, which aids in keeping the newly contoured shape and also prevents excess fluid buildup and bruising.
Most patients can return to work in just a few days (depending on their occupation) but their arms may be tender or uncomfortable for a bit. Some patients experience numbness, burning, swelling, and bruising as they heal but these discomforts will dissipate in a week or so. Depending on the patient, It may take weeks to months for all the bruising to resolve.
How Long Do The Results Last?
The fat cells that are removed during arm liposuction will not come back but fluctuations in weight can alter the remaining fat cells and change your results. The results of arm lipo should be maintained through a healthy lifestyle and exercise. Depending on lifestyle and genetics, it may be necessary to have additional “touch-ups” as the aging process can cause any loose skin to sag.
Can I Get Scars from Arm Liposuction?
Patients may experience very slight scarring from the procedure. The tiny incisions used for the cannula to access the fat are normally placed under the arm or near the elbow. Any arm lipo scar that may result will be very small and discreet.
