Schedule A ConsultationWhat Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a glandular medical condition that causes one or both of a male’s breasts to enlarge, and can cause what resembles female breasts to form on their chest. Boys often experience gynecomastia during puberty when there is an imbalance between their levels of estrogen and testosterone. It normally resolves itself by the age of 17, as their hormone levels even out. It can also be caused by certain medications, illegal drug use, or a decline in the testosterone level in older men during andropause.
Another condition that resembles gynecomastia is actually not glandular in nature, but caused by localized fatty deposits. Treatment for excess fatty deposits (pseudogynecomastia) is considered cosmetic and can be treated using a combination of liposuction and a procedure that tightens loose skin such as BodyTite.
Who Is A Candidate For
Gynecomastia Surgery?
- Men who are over the age of 17 and are experiencing breast enlargement that is not related to lifestyle;
- Men who feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about the way their chest looks and desire to look more masculine;
- Men who are in good health and are free from any medical conditions that could cause complications during surgery or their recovery;
- Candidates should have maintained a stable weight, be a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations of what the surgery can accomplish.
Procedure Steps
The steps of each patient’s gynecomastia surgery will depend on the extent of their condition and the degree of correction needed. The typical steps involved in male reduction surgery in Atlanta include:
An initial consultation where Dr. Angelina can examine your chest and determine the type of correction needed to deliver the results you want. She will gather your medical history and current health information, answer your questions, learn about your aesthetic goals and then outline the steps that will be needed for your procedure.
You will be given anesthesia to make sure you are comfortable during your surgery. Depending on Dr. Angelina’s recommendation and your preference, general anesthesia may be used or a combination of local anesthesia with sedation.
Dr. Angelina will create the incisions necessary to remove the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. She normally places incisions under the armpit and around the areola so the resulting scars will be very well hidden.
She will go in through these incisions and perform liposuction to remove excess fat that has accumulated to contour your chest to be flatter and more masculine-looking.
Next, she will remove any glandular tissue that is present. She removes this tissue using the least invasive way possible, but sometimes it may require an additional incision to cut it away.
Then, using the incision around the areola, she will remove the breast bud that is positioned right underneath.
Depending on the volume, she will remove the excess skin or tighten it up using the Bodytite procedure.
Dr. Angelina will close the incisions and cover them with surgical dressings to protect them as they heal. She will also place a compression garment on your chest that you will have to wear for several weeks.
Next, you are taken to a recovery area where you will be observed for a few hours until you are ready to be driven home by a friend or family member. Before you are discharged, you will be given the instructions for the proper care of your incisions, any pain medications or antibiotics you will need to take, and a date for your follow-up appointment.
Recovery
Your recovery from gynecomastia surgery will depend on how much correction was needed. All patients must wear their compression garments until they are told otherwise by Dr. Angelina. These help keep the swelling and bruising down to a minimum and hold the incisions securely in place until they heal.
You will be given exact instructions on when you can shower, drive, and return to other activities that will be based on how extensive your surgery was and how fast your body is healing. You will need to get as much rest as possible and must avoid sleeping on your chest until your incisions have healed. Sleeping at a 45-degree angle for several days after your surgery and then on your back for the first several weeks is recommended.
Results
After your gynecomastia surgery, your chest will appear flatter, more masculine, but still natural-looking. You should feel more confident about wearing certain clothing or removing your shirt in front of other people.

The entire staff are very kind! Dr. Angelina shows you listens to your needs and treats you like a human and not a number. While she is doing the procedure (I was having Botox for the first time) she used humor as well as explained what she was doing and the reasoning behind it. She is also very encouraging and THAT means more to me than anything.

Gynecomastia FAQs
How Common Is Gynecomastia?
This glandular condition is more common than you might think, affecting around 30% of all men at some point during their lives. The percentage of men with abnormally large breasts is much higher if you add in those who suffer from pseudogynecomastia.
How Is Gynecomastia Diagnosed?
Gynecomastia is normally diagnosed through a physical exam and imaging tests that are performed to determine the underlying cause. A mammogram or ultrasound can usually identify glandular tissue and rule out other conditions.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Covered By Medical Insurance?
Gynecomastia surgery may be covered by insurance if the surgeon deems it medically necessary and it is not being performed for cosmetic purposes. Determining if the surgery is medically necessary will depend on the underlying cause and whether the condition is related to the individual’s lifestyle (excess fatty tissue or use of steroids, etc.) vs. a hormonal imbalance (glandular).
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Difficult To Perform?
It is important to choose a surgeon who is highly skilled at performing gynecomastia surgery because it is a complex procedure and requires expertise and patience. A surgeon like Dr. Angelina Postoev can expertly remove excess tissue, skin, and fat and produce excellent natural-looking results with minimal scarring, nipple asymmetry, or complications such as chest hollowing.
