Breast Reduction in Atlanta, GA

Some women long for larger breasts so they can nicely fill out a bathing suit or appear more feminine, and then there are women who suffer with both physical and emotional pain because their breasts are too large for a standard-size bathing suit.

Dr. Angelina Postoev, a triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon with SurgiCare Arts & Aesthetics, understands that most women value their uniqueness and personal flair, but they would prefer not to be singled out or receive unwelcome attention because of the size of their breasts. She offers breast reduction surgery in Atlanta, Georgia, to help these women feel normal as well as beautiful.

Benefits

Many women who have overly large breasts for their small frame endure chronic physical back, neck, and shoulder pain as well as feel self-conscious about how they look. They find it difficult to participate in certain physical activities or even to find a bra or clothing that fits them properly. Many also suffer from emotional trauma because they feel prejudged by both women and men because of their breast size, which can create anxiety, especially in social situations.

A breast reduction, which is also called a reduction mammoplasty, can take a significant amount of weight off of the breasts and create more natural-looking body proportions. It will relieve back, neck, and shoulder pain as well as stop bra straps from causing shoulder notches from them digging in. Additionally, after a reduction, it will be possible to find appropriately sized clothing that fits well without appearing immodest.

What to Expect During Breast
Reduction Consultation?

You will meet with Dr. Angelina during an initial consultation to discuss your medical history and your desired results. She will take measurements and photographs to help create a plan for your procedure, answer any concerns you may have, and provide you with any necessary information you need to know while preparing for your breast reduction.

Procedure Steps

1

The patient is sedated with general anesthesia to ensure they remain comfortable for the duration of their reduction surgery. Breast reduction normally takes between 1 ½ and 3 hours. At Surgicare Arts & Aesthetics, it is performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home to recover the same day.

2

Dr. Angelina will carefully make the necessary incisions to perform the patient’s breast reduction using the best technique for their circumstances:

  • A circular shape that runs around the areola;
  • Shaped like a keyhole, circular around the areola and then vertically straight down to the breast fold;
  • An anchor shape.
3

After making the incisions, Dr. Angelina will reposition the nipple while it remains attached to the nerve and blood supply. The area of the areola will be made smaller during this step if desired by excising excess skin.

4

Dr. Angelina will eliminate excess breast tissue and lift, re-contour, and shape the remaining tissue into a smaller breast. She will then strategically place sutures inside the breast tissue to best support the changes and close the incisions using stitches, surgical tape, skin adhesives, or a combination of these methods to reduce the amount of scarring.

5

Sometimes it is necessary to combine the reduction procedure with a breast lift to achieve the desired result. A typical breast reduction does not lift a significant amount of sagging or loose skin, but using a combination of these surgeries can offer the best results.

6

Patients are taken to a recovery area where they will be observed for a few hours while coming out from under the effects of the anesthesia. They will be encouraged to get up and take short walks around the room to prevent blood clots, and if all is well, they eventually will be discharged to go home to recover. You will not be able to drive for a few weeks, so you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

Recovery

Recovering from a breast reduction takes anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks and will depend upon how extensive your surgery was.

Dr. Angelina may provide you with a pain medication prescription and another to

lower the risk of experiencing an infection. Some patients who undergo a breast reduction do not experience significant pain after their reduction and do not require any prescription strength pain medication.

Patients are required to wear a special bra while recovering from a breast reduction to help mitigate swelling and provide protection and support during the healing process. It is normal to experience post-surgical swelling after a breast reduction, which normally peaks at around 48 hours and can be uncomfortable. This swelling will gradually subside on its own over time but may take several months to completely disappear.

Dr. Angelina will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions that will detail activity restrictions, and she will advise you when you can return to work as she follows your recovery progress. Most patients take a week or two off of work, but depending on your job, you may be able to return earlier if you are feeling up to it.

Results

It can take up to six months to see the final results of your breast reduction due to swelling, but this surgery has proven to be life-changing for many women. Your breasts will be more proportionate for your frame, and it should be much easier to find stylish clothing that will fit your new figure. You will also find relief from chronic physical pain and poor posture that stemmed from your body trying to bear the extra weight of overly large breasts.

Most women experience a renewed sense of self, a greater level of self-confidence, and relief from the social anxiety they previously lived with.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Will Insurance Cover Breast Reduction Surgery?

In some cases, a breast reduction may be covered by your medical insurance. To qualify for coverage, you will need to demonstrate that the breast reduction is medically necessary rather than purely cosmetic.

Dr. Angelina can provide recommendations regarding gathering the necessary medical records, including documentation from other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians or physical therapists, who can verify the impact of large breasts on your health.

Many insurance companies, including Medicaid, may cover breast reduction surgery if the patient has a documented history of painful symptoms or physical limitations due to the weight of their breasts.

Will I Have Scars After A Breast Reduction?

Yes, due to the nature of the surgery, breast reduction results in scarring. The extent of the scarring will depend on how extensive the surgery is and what type of incisions are used.

Dr. Angelia uses every precaution to minimize scarring when performing breast reduction surgery. Scars will fade over time and lighten up so they are less visible, but there are also several cosmetic treatments that can help to further reduce their appearance.
