Laser Hair Removal Risks
There are many myths about laser hair removal risks.
However in fact, the procedure has only a few possible, non-dangerous side effects. Because we are using a laser, there are certain risks to take into account. Thermal injuries (burns) are possible, changes in skin color, crusting, changes in skin texture, blistering are all possible risks of laser hair removal.
But using the services of professionals, you can reduce the risks to almost zero. There are certain measures our technicians take to avoid any of these reactions. Using the Zimmer Cryo Chiller, using the correct laser based on skin typing, and reviewing medical history and medications being taken are some of the main ways to avoid these risks.
Also, there can be redness, irritation, itching, swelling and/or bumps to treated areas. These are all temporary side effects of the heat from laser and the reaction from the follicle being zapped by the laser. These side effects generally last anywhere from 15 minutes to 24 hours.
With the use of laser comes heat. This is why most times you will smell the aroma of burnt hair while receiving a treatment.
If any hair is on the surface of the skin, you will experience that hair being burnt, which is why we always recommend shaving prior to your treatment so that the laser’s energy is actually able to get to the hair’s follicle to do its job in damaging it, rather than just burning the hair on the surface to ensure a successful treatment.
We want to make sure that we are treating safely and not injuring the skin, so we employ the use of the Zimmer Cryo Chiller and at times also cool ultrasound gel.
Laser Hair Removal Procedure in Atlanta: What Should I Expect?
You often ask us: “Is laser hair removal permanent?”
We are damaging the follicle in order to slow and minimize the amount of growth. It is only permanent when the follicle is completely destroyed. The hair can eventually re-grow, hormones can play a big role in this. This is why we recommend doing touch ups from time to time to ensure the follicle is staying damaged.
How often – will depend on the person. For example, a patient who has completed laser hair removal treatments and experienced great results and reduction of growth then gets pregnant will most likely need to complete a series of touch ups after child birth due to the fact that being pregnant means an increase in hormones, which will generally increase amount of re-growth.
Most clinics/med spas do treatment packages of around 6-8 treatments in a package. We do 8 treatments in our packages, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
After the procedure we recommend to moisturize skin with 100% Aloe Vera (to help soothe skin and avoid itching), avoid hot showers and baths (can further irritate the skin), avoid sun, tanning beds and sunless tanning products for at least 7 days prior to and after treatment, be careful with certain products with chemicals and call if any problems or concerns.
